What is Kinesiology Taping?

Kinesiology taping (KT) was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase in the 1970’s, when he discovered that lifting the skin away from the tissues beneath improved the range of motion and decreased pain.

KT is a thin elastic tape that is said to stretch up to 120-140% of its resting length. The tape is a thin, porous material made of cotton allowing the skin to function. This allows air to pass through to limit skin irritation. KT manufactures claim the tape helps improve athletes’ range of motion, functional performance, and increase strength.

There are two main theories – firstly, by lifting the skin off the tissue underneath, it will increase the blood circulation to the soft muscle tissue, which helps facilitate a better range of motion. It may also support the body to go through the healing process by improving the lymphatic system.

Secondly, that it gives the area sensory feedback which improves posture and reduces the fear of movement. KT is believed to have a role in allowing the body to sense the position of neighbouring parts, meaning that by applying KT on the skin, it will stimulate certain receptors, giving the body information about the joint positioning and movement.

After Care

  • Keep the tape dry for the first hour. This allows the adhesive to fully bond to your skin, ensuring the tape stays on longer.
  • Avoid excessive rubbing or touching of the tape. This helps maintain the tape’s adhesive quality and prolong its effectiveness.
  • Gently pat the tape dry after sweating or showering. While kinesiology tape is water-resistant, keeping it dry helps it stick better and last longer. Avoid using a hairdryer or any direct heat on the tape.
  • Be mindful of skin irritation. If you notice any itching, redness, or discomfort, remove the tape immediately to avoid further skin damage.
  • Remove the tape slowly and carefully. When it’s time to take the tape off, do so gently, preferably after softening it with oil or lotion to minimize skin irritation.
  • Follow specific care instructions given by your therapist. They might have tailored advice based on your individual needs and the specifics of your treatment.
  • Continue any recommended exercises or movements. The tape is often part of a broader therapeutic approach, so keep up with any physical therapy or exercises suggested to maximize benefits.

Benefits

Kinesiology taping offers a unique approach to support and enhance your body's natural healing process, providing both physical and therapeutic benefits. Here are seven key benefits:

  • Pain Relief The tape gently lifts the skin, reducing pressure on underlying tissues and decreasing pain signals sent to the brain.
  • Reduced Swelling and Inflammation By creating more space under the skin, it encourages better lymphatic drainage and circulation, helping to reduce swelling.
  • Improved Posture and Muscle Support The tape provides support without restricting movement, aiding in maintaining proper posture and muscle alignment.
  • Enhanced Performance Athletes often use kinesiology tape to support muscles during activity, potentially improving strength and endurance.
  • Injury Prevention By supporting vulnerable areas, the tape can help prevent overextension or overcontraction of muscles.
  • Faster Recovery The improved circulation and reduced inflammation can help speed up recovery from injuries and intense exercise.
  • Increased Proprioception The tape enhances sensory feedback, helping improve body awareness and coordination, which is crucial for injury rehabilitation and prevention.
